For those of you out there that read this and think participating in a triathlon is impossible, think again. If I can do it, so can YOU!!!
As a cancer survivor, I live cat scan to cat scan, always praying for good news. Training for this triathlon has helped me forget about upcoming scans and just focus on getting healthy on the inside and out.
I am a 40 year old Stage IV breast cancer survivor who completed my first Triathlon last summer. I decided to do this after losing a dear friend, Jean Casey to breast Cancer. Her path went one way, and mine went the other. I am doing this for Jean, myself, and all the other survivors out there that can't.
I couldn't swim or put my head in the water last year at this time. I took swimming lessons and the rest is history. I borrowed a mountain bike and completed the tri with happy results. Crossing that finish line as a Stage IV survivor was the most amazing experience in my life. It is listed right up there with my wedding day and birth of my three children.
I have compromised abdominal muscles due to reconstructive breast surgery and have had a wedge of my lung removed. A plastic surgeon once told me that I most likely will not climb mountains or run road races after my crazy surgeries. Well, never tell a cancer survivor that they can't do something!! Maybe that is just what I needed to hear to challenge myself. Cancer may have impacted my physical abilities but it has made me stronger emotionally and more determined than ever to participate in Tri for a Cure in many years to come. I will not rest until this cure is found for us ALL!!!!xo
I need your help to raise as much money as possible for this horrible disease. I feel embarrassed asking at a time when the economy is struggling but cancer cannot wait. We need to continue to work together and do our part so no other person has to hear those dreadful words, "You have cancer". Let's find the cure in our lifetime!!
Every donation received is a step closer and I can't thank you enough for always supporting me. It means the world to me and my family.
Thank you for supporting Maine Cancer Foundation. Your contribution is greatly appreciated. Funds raised by this event will support research and patient support in Maine for all cancers.
